Steven Hunter - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was released in 2004 and it stars Jim Carrey. I found it to be a very strange movie, but Carrey’s performance in it was very good. In the movie Carrey has his memory erased to forget a loved one; however, during the process when he is in a coma-like state, he wants to retain his memories and stop the process. The movie explores the idea of brain mapping to isolate memories, so that they can be erased if necessary. I found this scary because if this was possible, you wouldn’t know it happened to you. When Carrey is in the coma-like state, it reminds me of Victor Turner’s idea of liminality. He is not really within the reality of the conscience humans, but he exists in his own little universe. He is sort of in a state of limbo. Also, the idea of Eros is apparent as this is the feeling Carrey feels for who he thinks is his one true love.
The imagery in the movie makes it very entertaining to watch, it was cool watching things disappear and watching people without faces. Carrey’s somewhat cruel honesty kept me involved the whole movie. My favorite line was when Clementine is talking to him about how they don’t communicate and he responds, “Constantly talking is not necessarily communicating.” I bet most guys agree with that line. It was a cool and insightful movie, and I think Carrey thrived in a non-comedic role. It makes you wonder, if the possibility of select memory erasing was possible would you do it? I don’t think I would, but I would not think it was wrong if others did it because I know some things are so painful and traumatic that they should be erased.
